Acceptance
Acceptance is a response to a risk event, generally made when the probability of the event and/or impact are small. It is used when mitigation, transference, or avoidance are not selected.

Active listening
Genuinely hearing what the speaker says. Active listening occurs when the receiver confirms the message is being received by feedback, questions, prompts for clarity, and other signs of having received the message.

Activity Definition
This process identifies the activities of the project that need to be performed to produce the product or service of the project.

Activity Duration Estimating
This process assesses the number of work periods needed to complete the project activities. Work periods are usually expressed in hours or days. Large projects might express duration in weeks or months.

Activity List
An output of activity definition that includes all of the activities to be performed within the project.
In addition, an extension of the WBS that contains all the activities of the project and a description of each activity.

Activity On Arrow (AOA)
A network diagramming method that places activities on arrows, which connect to dependent activities using nodes. This is also known as the Arrow Diagramming Method (ADM).

Activity On Node (AON)
A network diagramming method that places activities on nodes, which connect to dependent activities using arrows. This is also known as the Precedence Diagramming Method.

Activity Sequencing
A process for setting the logical order of activities within the project schedule.

Actual Cost (AC)
Used in earned value measurements. The actual cost of the work performed to date including direct and indirect costs.

For PMP exam:
  • The completion of each project phase requires administrative closure.
  • Administrative closure is also needed if a project is terminated.

Analogous Estimating
Estimating technique that uses the actual duration of a similar, completed activity to determine the duration of the current activity. Analogous estimating is also known as top-down estimating and is a form of expert judgment.

Arrow Diagram
A charting approach that uses nodes to represent events and arrows to describe the task between the nodes.

Arrow Diagramming Method (ADM)
A diagramming method that places activities on arrows, which connect to dependent activities using nodes. This is also known as activity on arrow.

Assessing Status
Determining how well the project has and will achieve its goals and objectives.

Assumption
An event or action believed to be true, real or certain for the sake of planning.

Avoidance
This is one response to a risk event. The risk is avoided by planning a different technique to remove the risk from the project.
